Empirical Analyses of Causation

چکیده

Conceptual analyses can be subdivided into two classes, good and evil. Empirical analysis is the good kind, routinely practiced in the sciences. Orthodox analysis is the malevolent version that plagues philosophical discourse. In this paper, I will clarify the difference between them, provide some reasons to prefer good over evil, and illustrate their consequences for the metaphysics of causation. By conducting an empirical analysis of causation rather than an orthodox analysis, one can segregate the genuine metaphysical problems that need to be addressed from the many pseudo-problems that have long dogged traditional accounts of causation.

A Probabilistic Analysis of Causation 2 6 Graphical Representation of Cases of Probability - Raising Non - Causation 7 Completing the Probabilistic Analysis of

The starting point in the development of probabilistic analyses of token causation has usually been the naive intuition that, in some relevant sense, a cause raises the probability of its effect. But there are well-known examples both of non-probability-raising causation and of probabilityraising non-causation. Sophisticated extant probabilistic analyses treat many such cases correctly, but onl...

Pushing brains: Can Cognitive Neuroscience Provide Experimental Evidence for Brain-Mind Causation?

What makes the issue of causal relations between mental and cerebral events so special? And is there experimental evidence from neuroscience for this sort of causation? To answer these questions, the issue of brain-mind causation is considered against the background of the mind-brain problem and the theory of causation in general. Then, one empirical study from cognitive neuroscience is discuss...

Embedded Cognition and Mental Causation: Setting Empirical Bounds on Metaphysics

In this paper, we challenge Jaegwon Kim’s version of neural reductionism according to which the causal powers of mental properties are pre-empted by those of neural properties. Using empirical and theoretical developments from the field of embedded cognition, we articulate and defend a notion of process externalism that extends Clark and Chalmers’ notion of an extended mind. We argue that proce...

Review of Physical Causation, by Phil Dowe (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2000)

Phil Dowe begins Physical Causation by outlining his metaphilosophical stance, distinguishing between the task of analysing our concept of causation, and the task of offering an “empirical analysis” of “what causation in fact is in the actual world” (p.3). Dowe’s energies are to be devoted to the latter task, although he regards the former as also legitimate. Thus he is not restricted by what w...
